What is your role as a teacher or school administrator in keeping your students safe from cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is not a trend that is going to disappear any time soon. As personal computers, cell phones, and the Internet become more popular, the opportunity for teens and preteens to pick on each other via these channels increases.
It’s important to understand why students cyberbully each other and know how to respond when you find about these situations going on among your students. And it’s essential to know how to approach this subject with your students and help prevent cyberbullying from occurring in the first place.
Inside the School’s upcoming online seminar Cyberbullying: Awareness and Prevention discusses the signs of cyberbullying and offers practical suggestions for keeping our young people safe.
After participating in this seminar you will be able to:
- Better understand the issues around online peer aggression and why students get involved in cyberbullying
- Recognize the signs of cyberbullying
- Help your students who confide in you that they are a victim of harassment
- Help prevent cyberbullying from escalating into suicide or physical harm
- Teach your students about the negative consequences of being an online bully
- Find, use and share many valuable online resources
- Provide resources and training to the rest of your school staff
- Better meet the requirement to teach Internet safety

It is becoming ever more widely recognized that Internet safety and cyberbullying are not specifically “technology” issues. Rather they are social / educational issues. Therefore administrators, teachers across curriculum areas, counselors and Prevention-Intervention staff, and other staff should attend Cyberbullying: Awareness and Prevention.
