CD/Transcript Cover

College is an important life step. And it becomes more important each year as the knowledge economy gets more and more competitive. At the same time, demographic trends are making college admissions more and more competitive.

For some students, choosing and getting accepted to their college of choice is easy. Some may go to the school their parents went to. Some may choose a school because they grew up cheering for its athletic teams.

However, the majority of students, particularly those who are the first in their family to attend college, have a tougher time choosing a school that’s right for them. They struggle with the application process, and aren’t always prepared for the financial commitment. It’s up to their teachers and college counselors to help them prepare for the college application process; from choosing schools to which they should apply, to writing application essays, to making the final decision, they play a big role.

Helping All Students Navigate the Path to College: 6 College Guidance Activities Teachers Can Easily Incorporate into Their Standards-Based Classrooms will give you solid activities to help your students prepare for college that you can implement in your classroom the very next day.

The activities you’ll learn from this online seminar are practical and easy to implement in your classrooms right away. The explanation and description of each activity will include references to research and statistics relevant to college guidance along with links to the research base on elements of effective instruction.

Most of the 6 activities will contain a parent component where the student will interact with and in some cases expose his or her parents to college. All attendees will also leave the seminar with a set of additional activities designed for parents. These activities can be held in the evening and help create a culture of college at a school.

These 6 activities:

  • Will prepare students for college and also align with state standards.
  • Align with common state standards in language arts, mathematics, or social studies.
  • Are easily adaptable for several different grade levels.
  • Have each been proven to work in the classroom.

By implementing these actives you will help your students:

  • Create a financial plan for college.
  • Create a list of colleges to apply to.
  • Write college essays.
  • Make a final college choice.
  • Make the transition to college.
