The Whorf-Sapir Hypothesis says that large differences in language lead to large differences in experience and thought. It goes on to say that each language embodies a worldview, with different languages embodying different views, so that speakers of different languages think about the world in different ways.

Today’s students are growing up in a world that is different from the world many of today’s educators grew up in. Our students are digital natives and they are arguably speaking a “different language.”

Inside the School’s 20-Minute Trainer will take a light-hearted, but serious look at this language theory more closely and help you decide if today’s students’ “social networking language” is shaping their perception of reality.

After viewing this 20-Minute Trainer, you will be able to:

Understand why social networking is important

Appreciate the freedom, power and responsibility of social networking

Communicate better with “digital natives”

Explain social networking to your colleagues

Think of ways to use social networking in the classroom

When school districts decide what to filter on their computers, or what websites and electronic material to “screen out,” it can be controversial. Some educators find most Internet material obnoxious and prefer almost everything blocked and some teachers find the filters annoying and counterproductive to their teaching.

Whatever your personal feelings are, the fact remains: school district computers must have filters.

Inside the School’s 20-Minute Trainer, Filtering: The Requirements and the Classroom, will review how filters impact education and what schools can do in conjunction with the filtering that is already in place. The presenter will also give tips for teachers to give to parents about filtering Internet content at home.

After viewing this 20-Minute Trainer, you will better understand:

CIPA and E-rate

Filtering requirements

How filtering affects student education

Overrides versus bypasses

‘Teachable moments’ for educators and parents

All employees deserve honest and candid feedback so they can improve job performance. Delivering candid feedback is not fun and usually not someone’s strong suit. Yet, it is an important part of being a manager. The 20-Minute Trainer: How to Give Feedback No One Wants to Hear will walk you through the necessary steps to give clear and succinct feedback.

It is understandable that administrators are reluctant to give feedback. No one wants to potentially create ill will, rattle a fellow educator’s confidence or alarm staff before a meeting. How to Give Feedback No One Wants to Hear will help you understand how to give feedback so a teacher can improve her job performance. It’s awkward, but it will ultimately help the teacher and benefit student learning.

The trouble is that forming a strong and influential group is easier said then done. Inside the School’s 20-Minute Trainer: How Can School Committees Be More Effective? identifies how to select a committee, how to establish a time frame for meetings, how to choose committee leadership, how to set the goals and how to dissolve the committee.

How Can School Committees Be More Effective? will explain how principals can plan committees before they are formed and encourage more staff participation. The principal sets the committee’s parameters, chooses the number of meetings, creates time limits for meetings, and defines a committee’s purpose. Volunteer committee members know how much time to set aside for the committee and they know that they won’t waste time discussing issues that aren’t related to the committee’s goal. After viewing this 20-Minute Trainer, you’ll be able to plan better for committees and you’ll have more volunteers to do the work.

Sometimes they stand awkwardly at the doorway and don’t do anything. Some can help a student like Sam focus on a lesson and stop bothering the girls. Some can be very loud and bossy. Others can make sure the back of the line is just as well behaved as the front of the line. Some can be tattle-tales. I’m not referring to students . . . I’m talking about classroom volunteers.

Classroom volunteers mean well. They like children and want to spend their free time helping the school. We want to encourage that. Sometimes, though, classroom volunteers can make more work for the teacher and create disharmony in the classroom.

Inside the School knows that a good classroom volunteer can increase student learning, so we’ve developed a 20-Minute Trainer: How Can I Use My Classroom Volunteer Effectively.

In 20 minutes you will review steps a teacher can take to use volunteers effectively in the classroom by setting the stage and staying in charge. Teachers and volunteers should be clear about the volunteer’s tasks and authority, about confidentiality and on feedback. You don’t want a volunteer to be yet another responsibility. By reviewing this 20-Minute Trainer, you will learn how to make your volunteer’s time in your classroom a good experience for everybody.

It’s second semester and Kevin’s rude behavior isn’t just annoying, it’s shredding your last nerve. Back in September you might have approached him quietly at his desk and asked him to use classroom-appropriate language. It’s third quarter now and that loud-mouthed kid is still at it. Instead of using your September methods, you raise your voice in front of the whole class and threaten to send that loud-mouthed kid to the office.

At this point, in your mind Kevin is no longer a low-performing student who avoids answering questions by saying rude words. Nope. Kevin is that loud-mouthed kid.

All of us depersonalize our students when we’re at the ends of our ropes and we find that those ends are frayed. Depersonalization happens for many reasons like dealing with high expectations, unmotivated students or lack of appreciation. Inside the School’s 20-Minute Trainer; How Can I Prevent Depersonalizing my Students? will guide you to positive attitudes and behaviors towards students, parents and colleagues. Having positive relationships with these groups is critical to maintaining good personal health and organizational effectiveness.

Reconnecting and keeping positive attitudes is central to a feeling of daily job satisfaction. According to a survey conducted in 2008 by the Quaglia Institute, only one in four school staff members feel valued for their unique skills and talents. This type of downward thinking can lead to poor job satisfaction and frustration in daily interactions. How Can I Prevent Depersonalizing my Students? will demonstrate at least two areas where teachers’ attitudes have gravitated to the negative and immediately take steps to change those attitudes.

The Quaglia Institute survey researchers found that 30% of staff believes there is no respect among colleagues. This discouraging thought can also lead to depersonalizing fellow teachers, even though they are the ones who truly understand each other’s challenges. Treating students, parents and colleagues with respect will lead to improved job satisfaction and a more productive attitude.

Nearly half of all teachers quit the profession during their first five years according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Keeping quality educators is one of the keys to student success. But how can you stay in a profession that demands so much of your time and energy? How do you avoid burnout? "Burnout" is a clinically studied and well-defined condition that you can actively avoid or "cure" by learning ways to handle some common issues. Inside the School’s 20-Minute Trainer How Can I Make Sure Personal Accomplishments Are Recognized? will discuss practical strategies teachers can apply to avoid burnout and remain in the profession.

Remember your first year of teaching? You’d stay up until 3 a.m. planning out a lesson or rush home to grade a stack of essays. You spent hours tweaking the curriculum to meet every learner’s needs and you knocked yourself out trying to reach the at-risk kids.

Now your briefcase feels heavy when you lug it home. You use lesson plans from three years ago, maybe five years ago. You watch the game on t.v. instead of reading the new textbook. Those hard-to-reach kids are someone else’s problem. You’re so emotionally exhausted that it’s all you can do to care about anyone but yourself and your family, let alone someone else’s kids.

Teacher emotional exhaustion is when teachers feel that they can no longer give of themselves to students as they did earlier in their careers. Inside the School’s 20-Minute Trainer How Can I Prevent Emotional Exhaustion? will help you reconnect with your passion that originally drew you to the profession. Presenter Nathan Eklund, M.Ed. uses his experiences as a high school teacher and coach to explain ways to overcome this sense of exhaustion by identifying areas that are "energy- giving" rather than "energy-taking."

Imagine coming to work every day feeling refreshed and eager to begin the day’s lesson plan. Eklund’s 20-minute presentation will help you concentrate on becoming personally and professionally satisfied. When we teachers are at our best, our students are, too. This awareness is at the core of professional improvement but is often overlooked. How Can I Prevent Emotional Exhaustion? puts this mindset at the center of discussion.

Emotional exhaustion can affect people in many different ways. A 2008 Quaglia Institute survey shows that nearly half of our students think teachers don’t enjoy working with them. We give so much to our teaching jobs that our emotional exhaustion begins to show. We know it. The kids know it. Teachers are impacted differently by what is important to them and can become exhausted for many reasons. View How Can I prevent Emotional Exhaustion? to learn how to end your emotional exhaustion and teach like you enjoy working with students.
